I was stopped from becoming a local government Chairman - Onyeka Onwenu

Onyeka Onwenu

Onyeka Onwenu (MFR), the musician and current chairman of National Center for Women Development (NCWD), today reaffirmed her support for President Goodluck Jonathan. Speaking on Sunrise Daily today, Ms. Onwenu did not pretend expressing her unalloyed loyalty and support for the First family of Nigeria.

The elegant stallion had caused a stir sometime in May when she went on the Channels TV show, Sunrise Daily, and said Nigerians ought to thank the First Lady for her efforts in the Girl Child issue.

The first lady, Patience Jonathan, has been condemned by a majority of Nigerians for her summon of state officials in a mini-investigation of the Chibok kidnap incident. She drew more condemnation when she declared that the abduction story was a hoax designed to discredit President Goodluck Jonathan. But Onyeka Onwenu came out strongly in favour of Dame Jonathan.

Onwenu said on the show that the #BringBackOurGirls protesters fielded impersonators as mothers of the abducted children. She also said the principal of the Government school where the over 200 girls were abducted from, included a 60 year old person in the list of abductees. Onwenu however stated on the show that she was not defending the first lady.

The NCWD Director General this time around came to talk about the women empowerment programme being put together this month of October by her organisation in partnership with the office of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Onwenu told her hosts that Patience Jonathan was working behind the scenes to get the missing Chibok girls back. In her own words, “I have never met anyone as down to Earth as the First Lady. She has a wonderful heart. We ought to thank her.”

She also talked about the much reported ambition of hers to become a local government chairman in Imo state, "I was stopped, because I am Onyeka Onwenu; but it was a good learning experience." She did not however mention who or what stopped her ambition.
